behind the blog: here & now

This week's Behind the Blog is about a girl close to my heart...and brain! Jessica, who blogs at Here & Now, is a Ph.D student in biomedical research so she feels me on my lab coat pain but luckily for all of us, she has a great sense of style underneath it. Please give her a warm welcome!
Tell us what motivate you to start blogging. Were you following a lot of personal style/fashion blogs before you started blogging?

thrice

Layer button up, v-neck, blazer
When I was playing around with what item from Monday to wear today (I didn't go to work yesterday so no pass it on for Tuesday!), Kelly from Alterations Needed (one of my favorite petite/overall bloggers) shared a video on vine on layering...and I realized I had all of those pieces! Ta-da, outfit made. I think this is one of my favorite outfits yet - it was comfortable yet polished.

Plus my spiffy new camera lens makes everything look so fresh and so clean.

unblog

Stripes, Leopard
This is one of those outfits that I normally wouldn't have blogged. The lighting was off, the outfit is pretty boring, my pants look all puckered even though they are almost too loose, I'm still getting used to my new lens, and I look/feel kind of frumpy in these pictures. wah wah.

While I try to keep it pretty real on my blog, I also try to put my best food forward. There are at least 3 outfits a month where I intend to blog about them, but what I see in the mirror doesn't translate to what I see in pictures. Please tell me I'm not the only one, and not that all of you other bloggers look amazing all the time.

But... with this whole "take one pass it on", I couldn't pass on blogging because I specifically wore the scarf again. Damn you, blogging challenges!

black blazed

Oversized Blazer, Leopard Scarf, Distressed Denim 1
A black blazer is something I've wanted in my closet for a really long time, but never really made an effort to look for because I knew finding something that fits me exactly how I want it to wasn't going to be that easy, especially with a limited budget. I got really lucky during a Saturday color tag sale at Goodwill where I got this blazer for $4. The sizing is strange since my other favorite blazer is a 10 Tall, whereas this blazer is a 12 Petite but somehow it works since it fits my shoulders well. The only down side is that the arms are too short which isn't really a problem for me since I insist that all my sleeves be pushed/cuffed up - I hate full length sleeves. It is a bit more casual but I think it'll serve my closet well for now. I'll still be on the look out for a more formal black blazer but I'll probably wait to buy that as part of a suit - something I don't really need at this moment.

refining my wardrobe: part 2

via
This is the second installment of refining my wardrobe which is based off of Putting Me Together's Wardrobe from Scratch. Part one of RMW involved defining my lifestyle and what my style preferences gravitate towards. Part two is going to be all about colors. Again, this is based off of PMT's color post - all pictures are from Audrey's site or from Academichic and then sometimes altered by me. I highly urge you to read both of these posts before you read mine as they actually know what they're talking about and I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this.

choosing neutrals

Audrey recommends sticking to 1-2 neutrals that can be mixed and match throughout your closet. For me, these neutrals are a tan/cognac and black. I have purses (cognac | black), shoes (cognac | black), and belts in both of these colors, although I'd like to update the belts as mine were cheap and aren't in the greatest condition. I know that black works well for my wardrobe, and my black cigarette jeans were one of my most worn items. I'd like to also incorporate more cream in my closet, probably through tops and accessories.

choosing a color palette

Audrey suggests choosing 2-3 colors and focusing on those first for those building their wardrobe from scratch. For refining my wardrobe, I'd like to figure out what colors I feel most comfortable with and what is already in my closet, and then look to find what colors work well with them. In my closet, the majority of my clothes are in the blue and red color families. I rarely do orange, greens, or yellows (except for my mustard cardigan which seems to go with everything).  I just went and looked through the last few month's worth of outfits, and I rarely deviate from the red and blue family. I do enjoy darker greens as well, such as my cargo vest, and am actually on the look out for a military green shirt as I think it would be a great neutral alternative to a chambray shirt (I have my eye on this one).

According to Academichic's post on color, I should use the 2/3 triad rule to work with my colors of preference. This means I would work with 2 of the 3 colors and then work between brights and more muted colors. As I understand it (and we all know this could be wrong), a bright red cardigan with a muted blue chambray shirt would work well together, or a bright mustard cardigan would work with a muted purple. I think I'm going to keep a print out of this color wheel in my closet (or at least on my cell phone) so I have a guide for working with colors on a daily basis.

Understanding what color families I stick to means I can focus finding complimentary colors and pairings. I think a few more muted colors, such as darker teals, purples and wines will compliment the current brighter items in my closet well. I believe up next in Audrey's Wardrobe from Scratch is fit, so I'm sure we'll have plenty to learn from her!

take one, pass it on.

A couple of weeks ago I felt like I was in a pretty big clothing funk - winter,  having to be so covered up, and being bored with the clothes in my closet kind of created the perfect storm for clothing funk. You guys had so many great suggestions about how to get out of it, and one of the biggest suggestions was to do a 30x30. I've really enjoyed watching all of you do 30x30s because you guys are all so creative and really know how to stretch your clothing items. The reason I resisted from participating is because I'm already quite limited in what I can wear. Because I don't own many dresses/skirts (because I can only wear them with boots) and because my shoe choices are already quite slim, I didn't feel I could get as much out of the challenge as some of you other ladies.

Yesterday I saw AJ's post about doing a new challenge started by Sarah's Real Life called Take One, Pass it On. It's pretty self explanatory - wear an outfit one day, and the next day you take one piece from the previous day (jewelry and shoes included!) and wear it again. I feel this gives me a bit more flexibility and options than a 30x30 would because it works better with my work clothing restrictions. It also involves less planning which is always a plus in my book!

Looking for a way to mix it up in February? I urge you to give it a try - some ladies are also only doing it for a week so maybe a bit of mid February excitement if you're looking for it!

booted

Polka Dots, Vest, Purplem4
After our little snow storm yesterday I felt it was necessary to give the hussy ankles a break and actually wear boots. These boots are about 3 years old and now are definitely starting to show their wear - as I was playing around in the snow this afternoon with the pups I felt one foot getting wet...because there's a tiny hole in the boot.

Dang it. I have worn these pretty much to the ground though (it seems to be a theme in my current closet) so finding a new pair of boots is pretty important. I think instead of just brown boots I'm going to look for some two-tone boots (like this or this pair). My mom just bought a pair of gorgeous Frye two-tones shoes so I'm hoping to find something similar in my price range.
