trying something a little new (+ premium jeans giveaway!)

DSC02219picture 2

A couple of weeks ago, I decided that I wanted to buy a pair of flare jeans. I have so many skinny jeans, and while I love them, I was ready for something new and fun. Because I have to order everything online, I went to my trusty Fitcode to guide me in my search. I've used and talked about them in the past, but basically Fitcode has an algorithm to figure our your shape, and then makes recommendations for jeans that would fit your body well. Since you can filter your results by shape, I quickly found these BLANKNYC flared jeans...and bonus, they were on sale! I ordered them in my regular jeans size, and find they run true to size. I think they are just a fun way to add a little variety to my closet while having them be super versatile - I can wear them with blouses, sweaters, tees, and it just always works. CR kept calling them mom jeans, but really, what do boys know anyway? I love the sexy shape the create, plus it's always a win when you add something to your closet that goes with so much you already own.

Seriously three days after I ordered my jeans, Fitcode reached out again and asked if I wanted to hold a giveaway on my blog for a pair of jeans. I'm already such a fan that I agreed immediately because I have enjoyed using their service, and I wanted one of you to win a pair of jeans!

As a disclosure, I paid for my own jeans before they even reached out, I am not being compensated for this giveaway, but it is also a blogger competition so if my giveaway has the most entries, I get a giftcard too. Enter the giveaway though the Rafflecopter below - your Fitcode is the number you receive when you answer their 4 questions. For example, mine is 710.

it's a plaid plaid world

plaid blazer with white top and black pants This plaid blazer is probably the oldest item in my closet. I've had it for over five years, and I just don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I've worn it similar ways in the past, but sometimes you just have to repeat something you really love wearing.

I hope you guys all have a good Halloween! I'm not really one for dressing up (the one time I did in college was super fun though), so CR and I are going to take turns wearing our cat ears and handing out candy to the neighborhood kids. If that doesn't make us sound old and boring, I don't know what will! ;)

And now that the temperatures have officially dropped (we finally had to turn our heat on last weekend), it's also officially plaid season! Below are six items, all under $75. Practical me loves the pointed flats, but impractical me loves the cape. Which is your favorite?

ask me anything: personal life

DSC07184
Today I'm going to answer a few more of the questions you guys had during my survey in April. You can find previous ask me anything posts here! These questions are all more about my personal life. Anything not answered below? Let me know in the comments!

How do you deal with your online presence? How do you balance your professional aspirations with having a significant online history? I consider you a tactful and professional blogger but just from a privacy standpoint, I know that as an engineer I wouldn't necessarily want my identity/personal preferences over several years readily available to colleagues/potential clients/employers. How do you feel about writing as a to-be-doctor and your patients being able to see your posts? Does this ever influence what you write?

twirl

black midi skirt with a striped top
If you've been following this blog for any period of time at all, you will have noticed that I tend to stick to a three looks. Ankle pants + blouse. Pencil skirt + tee. Fit and flare dress, belted. Mix in a few blazers, cardigans, and sweaters, and that's what I wear. I'm very picky about how things look on my body, which is why I don't really branch out from what I know works on me. There are so many things I'd love to look good on me - slouchy tops with skinny jeans. Off the shoulder dresses. Strapless anyything. But I hate being uncomfortable and I don't want look broader/bigger than I am, so I stick with my outfit formulas that work.

That being said, I've really tried over the last year just to branch out a little bit. I don't always want to stick to my "rules", which is why I kept this skirt after trying it earlier this year. I was a bit hesitant because I thought it gave me a weird hip shelf, and I didn't want it to cut me off weird, and what do you even wear with it?

But you know what? I looooooooooove it. I'm seriously in love with this skirt. Is a mid-length circle skirt really ground breaking? Nope. But for a girl who is very set in her sartorial ways, it was kind of exciting to try something new.

Plus it's fun to twirl in too :)

knowing when to let go

chambray shirt with striped skirt
No, this post will not be about knowing when to let go of a boyfriend, although trust, I could write a whole book about that topic ;) Instead, it's going to be about letting go of a piece of clothing. Not nearly as scandalous to write about it but maybe a bit more applicable to this here style blog.

So I bought this striped skirt two years. It was soon after I found out I got into school, and I was really excited to get out of my lab clothes and into more "fun" clothes (jokes on me now, I miss those jean days!). I found this skirt on a sales rack at Banana Republic, and bought it in preparation for school. Well, school came, and I found myself never reaching for this skirt. I never really thought about why, until I was doing a bit of closet rearranging the other day and tried to make an outfit around it. The biggest issue for me is that it's actually a navy + cream combo, and that means it restricts what I can wear with it. I would much prefer it to be black and white, because it means I could mix and match it with so many more of the tops in my closet. It is also too large on me. But I still like it enough, so I paired it with my favorite chambray top and cognac wedges, and went on with my day. Turns out, chambray goes with just about everything.

So I have this skirt that in theory I should like (hello, stripes) but in reality I don't. The thing is, I would like to own a striped pencil skirt because I could see it being pretty versatile, but I would never go and buy a new one because I already own one, although it's one I don't really wear because it's not what I want. So the issue is - do I keep a skirt that is fine, there's nothing really wrong with it, or do I get rid of it and move on?

I've had a lot of people ask me how to do a closet clean up. Between the time I found out I got into school and before I moved two years ago, I got rid of a lot of clothes in my closet. It was right around the time that I was getting better about figuring out what worked on my body, what I wanted in my closet, and what I didn't, and so I got rid of the clothes I had accumulated over the seven years I lived in Madison. Over the past two years, I have really honed in on my style, and realized that works for my dress code and what doesn't. I've held on to quite a few pieces over the last two years that I bought before I started school because I thought they would work in my current lifestyle, but I realize now that I never ever reach for them. With another move coming up, I've been slowly working my way back through my closet. There's definitely certain items that are easier to let go - ones I haven't touched since moving, or ones that just aren't as nice as they once were. I've either passed them on to friends/family members, sent them in to ThredUp, or donated them.

The harder pieces are ones that you just don't wear as often although there is nothing really wrong with them. I have a really hard time letting go of those pieces. I paid good money for them, I should make it work somehow! But because I have clothes I like a lot more, I wear those instead, and occasional try to make something work that I'm just not as excited about. So when a closet clean up comes around, and I come across something that I haven't worn in a while, I try to make it work. I tried this skirt with three or four shirts before I found one where the colors worked together, and a belt that kept the skirt from falling off. While I like this particular outfit, I don't think that getting dressed should be such a hassle. I've spent years trying to build a closet with clothes I'm excited to wear, so holding on to something because I paid $20 for it two years ago is not a good enough reason to have it take up a hanger.

So to wrap up this novella about a striped skirt....I'm selling the skirt. I know that once it is gone, I won't even miss it. And then some day, when I come across a striped skirt that is in the colors that I want, in a size that fits me, I won't feel guilty about buying it. Or I'll never find one I like, and that's okay too.

What tips do you have for getting rid of those pieces that are fine, but not great? Do you hold on to them in hopes you fall back in love, or get rid of it and move on?

a boy's life

blue blouse with a black pencil skirt

For the men at my school, the dress code is very straightforward - you have to wear a shirt and tie. For the ladies, the rules are a little easier to play with - you just can't wear jeans, and you're supposed to look "professional". This leaves a ton up to interpretation, so you'll see anything from yoga pants to sundresses to the more conservative pants suit.

I felt this outfit was like the female equivalent to the mens rule - button up, black bottom, shoes and a belt that match. The feminine shape of the skirt and the gold jewelry make it all girl though ;)

ten things

shades of blue and cognac you may not know about me [as inspired by Alissa's recent post]

  1. Growing up, my parents insisted I have long hair - it was down to my butt for much of my childhood
  2. I planned on becoming an English teacher in college, until my parents convinced me to give science a try.
  3. I'm a permanent resident, not a citizen, of the US, so I'm not allowed to vote. Everyone always asks me if I'm going eventually become a citizen, and to be honest, I don't really know why I would go through the hassle of it all.
  4. I will always choose a cheeseburger over a piece of cake
  5. ...unless it's tiramisu, and then it's a toss up (but only if it's made by my mom)
  6. I was in the University of Wisconsin Marching Band in college. It sounds super dorky, but it was actually the hardest thing I've ever done, and the most rewarding (so far in life, anyway!). I got to travel all over the country, met some of the coolest people, and I can honestly say those were the happiest years of my life - so far ;)
  7. I became scuba certified in sixth grade, but only have gone a handful of times since then. My sister, dad, uncle, and I went on a scuba trip my junior year of college to Little Cayman and it was by far one of the coolest experiences - we saw a hammerhead shark!
  8. My first car was a '57 Chevy Bel Air. It didn't work when my dad bought it from one of the nurses he worked with, but we spent a year fixing it. It was giant and bright teal and I half loved it and half hated it. We ended up selling it back to that same nurse after I graduated from high school.
  9. I have a small star tattoo on my left wrist. You may have never seen it (although you can in the picture below) because 19 year old me was smart enough to put it somewhere that can easily be covered up, but even so, I plan on having it lasered off when I pay my braces off...
  10. ...I have braces! I did the whole braces thing twice growing up, but it didn't stick. I'm using my blogging income to have a mouth full of straight teeth, once and for all (although they aren't all real - my sister pushed me down a water slide when I was younger, and I broke off one of my front teeth. bitch.)
Your turn! What don't we know about you?
