day in the life: 24 hour OB call

as always, details have been changed slightly
5:30am: time to wake up! Luckily I've been getting up at this time for months now, so it's slightly less shocking than it was nine months ago. I take a quick shower, and put my makeup on. I've recently starting using the Estee Lauder light doublewear foundation (review coming soon!), and this Too Faced blush (that's currently 15% off if you are a VIB!), hoping it'll last me through the day.

sassafras

DSC02956picture 2 Apparently, I was feeling extra sassy this day (you should see the outtakes - the eyebrows were out.of.control)!

I think I was probably slightly compensating for that grow out - yikes! I haven't been to the hair dresser in almost six months (partially to grow my hair out after it accidentally got chopped off last summer), and I finally go in next week! While I'm a blondie, it has slowly become a dark dirty blond over the years, so girlfriend needs her highlights. For me, I've run the gauntlet with hair - I've had red hair, black hair, long hair, short hair, bangs, a perm...but I always go back to medium length blond with side swept bangs. It's that safe hairstyle that I think looks best on me...but then I get an itch to do something new. Any suggestions for this time around? Or just pretty highlights and a trim, as always? Because to be honest, this is basically what I wish my hair looked like all the time.

Today is the second to last day of the Shopbop sale - save 25% off your entire order using the code INTHEFAM. This is one of the best sales out there, and even though Shopbop does have many expensive items, they also have some great more reasonably priced items as well. Below are my picks for shoes, jeans, and clutches at three different price points. Have you picked anything up during the sale?

beauty tuesday: ask me anything

I've never worn makeup before but as I get older (and more tired) I'm tempted to start. Do you have any tips on how to get started? I like to be low-maintenance and eco-friendly, so I'm not sure if it's possible within those parameters?

My biggest piece of advice would be to figure out what is the biggest concern you have, and what would make the biggest difference on you, and start from there. For example, on me as a blondie with light eyelashes and eyebrows, using mascara and filling in my eyebrows makes a huge difference. If you don't usually wear any makeup, I'd advise starting with the big hitters - eyes, cheeks, and lips. Physician's Formula makes a 100% natural mascara that is highly rated. Tarte is known for leaning more on the eco-friendly side, and I've had my eye on their cheek tints - they look like an easy way to add a bit of color to your cheeks! For lips, Burt's Bees is a great place to look, since they have both lipbalms and lipsticks (I've heard great things about these!).

I was wondering about your experience with tretinoin. Have you experienced positive results?

I actually wrote a whole post about this a few months ago. I'm very pleased with my results!

I just wanted to know if you have tried any Josie Maran skin products, like her Argon Oil. My daughter swears by them and just wanted to suggest that for your dry skin problems.

I have, and I've really enjoyed them, although I didn't find the right place in my routine for them. In the AM, I found that they made my skin just a little too greasy, and I found my make-up sliding off my face. In the PM, I really look for products that can help improve my skin, and although her oil made my skin less dry, I didn't really notice a transformation in my skin from using her Argon Oil. I have used her Argan Milk treatment though, and it has worked wonders on those dry patches!

What do you think about powder sunscreens? Think Peter Thomas Roth instant mineral SPF45 or mineral fusion SPF30 from Ulta? Summer is approaching and there is nothing worse than having to reapply sunscreen over your makeup.

For this question, I consulted my friend Joyce, who is a dermatology resident at NYU. Her advice (and the FDA's) is that a powder sunscreen should not replace a standard sunscreen, you should still be using a sunscreen under your make-up every day.

My personal advice? If it's between not reapplying any sunscreen, or using a powder form of SPF (not a face powder that has SPF) throughout the day after using sunscreen earlier in the day, obviously a little protection is better than none. But if you are spending all day in the sun, slap on the sunscreen, and keep a little powder in your purse to fix your makeup afterwards.

You always manage to have such impeccable makeup! I'm pretty bare-bones with my routine, but I find my makeup always seems to fade and smudge quickly. You and I also have pretty different skin types, but I was wondering - what would you consider the BASICS for a make-up routine to get a lasting flawless look (or as close as possible)?

This is such a great question, and one I plan on going into more detail in a future post (it's just taking me a while to put it together!). The biggest thing to get your makeup to look flawless is good skincare - which, trust me, is easier said than done. So for me, getting my dry flaky skin to not be so flaky has made a huge difference in how my makeup applies and looks. Secondly, a good primer has made such a difference in terms of my makeup going on smoothly and staying put. There are a whole range of formulas and prices - I typically use the Laura Mercier hydrating primer, which is perfect for an additional layer of hydration. If you are new to primers, I'd suggest going to Sephora and just talking to a sales associate about your skin concerns, and they'll have plenty of suggestions for you!

I've also had dry flaky skin like you, and haven't figured out a way to fix it. Any advice?

I have been very experimental these past nine months, trying to find the best way to deal with my dry flaky skin. For the flakes themselves, the products that have made the most difference is the Glam Glow mask once a week and using a konjac sponge several times a week. For moisturizing, the First Aid Rehydrating Serum has made the biggest difference for me. I really notice how dry my skin is on mornings I forget to use it!

I am new to makeup and want something to even out my skin tone and at the same time to have a dewy fresh finish. What one or two products do you recommend I start with? Currently I am a lazy makeup person with just mascara and lipgloss.

I think the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue would be a great place to start to get a bit more coverage while keeping that fresh look that you want! I'm a huge fan of it, and find that when used alone, it gives you a bit more coverage, and when mixed with a thicker foundation, it gives you the dewiness you want.

You mentioned in a makeup favorites video that you've been watching more beauty you-tubers. Could you let us know who you're enjoying? I'm looking for some new inspiration!

I'm still new to watching YouTube beauty videos, and so I really only follow a few, especially because it takes so much more time to watch a video rather than skimming a blog post. The ones I watch are Vivianna Does Makeup, Makeup TIA, Jaclyn Hill, and Kristina.

I've been coloring my hair for a long while now, but I'm bored of my basic shampoo/conditioner set - Loreal Everpure. Do you have any advice for hair are that's non-pricey?

I actually don't have any real recommendations, because I also use the L'oreal Everpure system! I haven't found a brand or type of shampoo/conditioner system I really really love, or that has made a difference on my hair, so if any of you feel strongly about something, please let me know because I'm more than willing to try!

I know you've mentioned having dry skin, but you also mention getting pimples, so you must have some oily areas as well. Can you recommend a good mattifier that I could wear under make-up? I find that especially as the weather heats up, my liquid make-up melts because of the oil underneath. I've been looking at Paula's Choice, but was wondering if you had any suggestions.

For me, my acne is probably more due to face touching rather than having truly oily skin - all my acne is right where I rest my face on my hands, especially when I study, so I think it has more to do with that rather than having truly oily skin. Since I personally don't have experience with needing a mattifier, I would suggest going into a Sephora or Ulta and asking the staff there for their recommendations for a mattifying primer, as they have a lot more experience! Or, if any of you guys have suggestions, I'm sure she would appreciate any input you have!

What is on your list for the Sephora sale next week?

I'm so excited for this sale! The sale Halley is referring to is the Sephora VIB sale starting this Friday, where VIB members get 15% off their orders. The items I'm considering are:

  • Becca's pressed highlighter: I looooove her liquid highlighter, but I don't always have the time or patience to use it in the morning. The powder form would be a pretty, and more efficient, option.
  • Kevyn Aucoin's sculpting powder: a favorite of the beauty blogger crowd, I've really wanted to try this for a while now! Have any of you had any experience with it?
  • Peter Thomas Roth Mask set: another item I've wanted to try for quite some time but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've heard great reviews on that pumpkin enzyme mask!
  • Ouai Texturizing spray: I just ran out of my Amika texturizing spray, and I'm ready to just try something new. Plus how pretty is the bottle?
  • Tarte Butter Lipstick: I'm trying to be more adventurous with my lipsticks, so the reddish pink color is definitely in my basket!

ps. I'm sure you've seen that Shopbop is having their Friends & Family sale right now, which I think is truly their best sale of the year because it's 25% off everything, not a "spend this much to get this much off". I personally just ordered these slightly distressed jeans, as well as this fairly inexpensive clutch from Baggu. Tomorrow I'll include my picks at all price points!

top three [04.03.2016]

who knew that my most worn piece of jewelry would be an $8 necklace from F21?

  • There are two types of twins: identical (one egg + one sperm that split into two embryos) and fraternal (two eggs fertilized by two sperm). Heteropaternal superfecundation is when two eggs are fertilized by sperm from two different men...which means a pair of twins from one mother are from two different fathers. There are only 10 reported cases in the world!
  • Endometriosis is when uterine tissues grows outside of the uterus. It typically affects structures below the diaphragm, like the ovaries, intestines, and bladder. Rarely, it can be found above the diaphragm. Catamenial pneumothorax is when a lung collapses due to the bleeding of endometriosis in lung pleura.

  • I recently read that medical schools do a poor job of educating future doctors on preventive health care, that is, good nutrition and physical activity. What are your thoughts? Do you think you've been adequately prepared for advising patients on how to stay healthy?
    • I would probably agree with that. While we took a nutrition course during our pre-clinical years, and we are taught that the first line treatment for many chronic conditions is proper exercise and dieting, I don't think we aren't taught the skills to fully educate our patients on nutrition and exercise as well as we are taught the pharmacology and guidelines for medications. Luckily, there are professionals like nutritionists and dietitians who have a lot more education and experience that we can direct patients to. I personally would love to be able to have those discussions with my own future patients.
  • This may be a strange question. I really like the combo of narrow/skinny jeans or ponte pants with cute blouses that you often wear. When trying to replicate it, though, I struggle with the choice of underwear to go with it. Either panty lines are on show, or I have to wear a really long top that covers my bottom. Would you mind sharing what you do?
    • I totally know what you are talking about! I like a little more coverage, if you know what I mean, so my go-to are these no-show hiphugger from Victoria's Secret. I have a ton, they don't show through pants (not even leggings!), and give me the coverage I want.
  • Can you show us/tell us your what your typical weekend schedule is?
    • The best part about third year is that I have a lot less of a weekend schedule than I did during my first two years! Typically on Friday night, CR and I take the night off - we go to dinner, watch a movie, or just binge watch Netflix. On Saturdays, we sleep in, make brunch, and spend the day studying, going to the gym, and maybe getting dinner with friends. Sundays again involves studying, getting our lives in order for the week, and lounging. So really, it's just like anyone else's weekends with some studying thrown in.
  • ps: this week's Beauty Tuesday will be an AMA for makeup/skincare, so let me know if you have any questions!

    • You guys know I don't really do a lot of sleeveless items, but the lace details on this top make me reconsider. I love that blush color!
    • While this fringe wrap skirt is too short for me for work, it sure would make a fun weekend skirt to own! I think it could be super versatile.

personal
  • Well, that finishes my second round of OB for the year (I have one more in May!). This rotation was pretty busy for me, but I feel like I learned a ton as well. Next up: pediatrics! Unfortunately it's all outpatient, but I'm very very excited to spend my day with kids. Now I just need to figure out how to stay healthy for a month around those rugrats :)
  • We had a little movie night last night and watched The Big Short and Concussion. We had our favorite med school couple over, made moscow mules, and made a night of it.
  • Did it snow where you are too? COME ON, it's April! Not funny.

march budget

fashion blog on a budget
Loft blouse [seen here]: originally $60, on sale for $35
Gap blouse [reviewed here]: originally $30, on sale for $15
Loft blouse [seen here]: originally $60, on sale for $35

March budget: $85

Quarterly budget: $625 - $145 in February - $85 in March = $395 for April

Well, it was a pretty boring month...but not for a lack of trying! I ordered quite a few items, but not a lot worked out. I ordered several different work pants, but none worked out. I put in order in to Boden - it included this pretty short-sleeved wrap dress and while I love it, I don't really have a need for it right now, so I'm returning it now and possibly reordering later in the summer for CR's brother's wedding. I also ordered this swing top from Anthro that was too short on me.

You guys know that I don't usually jump on trends for the most part, but I just couldn't resist with the lace up flats trend - I think they are so freaking cute! I ordered this laser cut pair from Topshop (they are under $50!) a few days ago, and can't wait to try them on. In April my big goal is to find a pair of dark wash distressed denim - it seems to be so much more difficult than I thought it would be! This pair from 7 For All Mankind is as close to what I want that I could find, but even then it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

I'd also like to find some nude strappy sandals - I need something that is a bit dressier, but without too high of a heel as I don't like to be towering over people. This pair from Clark is the closest I could find to what I'm looking for - turns out, it seems to be difficult to make strappy nude sandals that don't look too matronly! I'm trying to find the right combo between what works for my life, and what looks good in pictures, to be honest. I never dress "for the blog", I wear what I want and take pictures, so while I could just buy a strappy pair of high heels that would look great in pictures, I know that I would never actually wear them in real life, so I'm just trying to find that happy medium.

So that's it for me! I have quite a bit of wiggle room for next month - I fully intend on not spending most of it though. I'm out of scrubs and back into regular dress clothes for the month though, so we will see how tired I am of dress pants by the end ;)

bits & pieces

DSC02743picture 2

I found a new colored wall! Being a blogger in a small city is not the easiest - unlike those in bigger cities, we don't have any cute buildings, notable backgrounds, or pretty houses to stand in front of here. I found this blue building recently though, and was SO excited to finally have something new for the background.  I love the way it makes my new Loft blouse (which, btw, is currently on sale + 40% off + free shipping!) pop. I feel so bloggery! ;)

I'm currently on my second 24 hour call within the last week. Labor and delivery is all about the waiting game - we have a few ladies in labor, but we won't have a baby for hours. Until then, it's all about reading and doing practice questions...and finding snacks in between.

...and since Loft currently has such a great sale (40% off everything + free shipping on any order!), here are a few of my picks. Their new stuff is so freaking cute, I just want one of everything. My favorites include that coral lace dress and the espadrilles, and notably, it looks like they brought back that chambray blazer that I own, and now in extended petite/tall sizing (here's how I've worn it in the past!).
