  • I’m considering a career change into medicine after 11 years out of college. I have two young kids (3yr and 3mo old) - any tips for the transition? Thoughts on med school v. PA or nursing? Am I completely crazy to think about doing this with a young family and at age 33?!?
    • I do not think you are crazy at all! I think first things you have to think about is how you see yourself working in health care. While doctors and nurses both work in the same environment, their roles (and education) are very very different. Becoming a full fledged doctor comes with another few years of getting the pre-reqs, 4 years of medical school, and at least another 3 years of training - along with that comes $150-$300k in debt, as well as very little flexible time during most of the 5+ years of clinical work. Maybe PA school would be a great in between - it's 2 years of school and no required training after, you'll make great money, and very likely have more flexibility in balancing your home life and work life than you would as a resident/young attending. I see many women on instagram about my age who have children about Penny's age who now are working part time, a luxury I can't have. There are SO many more things that go into this, as I don't know you, but those are just some of my rambling thoughts!
  • After my third vaginal child birth, I discovered I have a prolapse and after seeing my obgyn was referred to a pelvic floor physical therapist. I've since been discovering a lot on my own too about pelvic floor health and I'm a little annoyed that I knew nothing about it before/during pregnancy. There seems to be a disconnect between obgyns and pelvic floor health. I feel like I'm backtracking when more could've been done preventatively if I'd been made aware by my doctor. Any comments on this being an obgyn? Appreciate it! :)
    • There is definitely a disconnect and it's really a shame we don't get more training or have more understanding of pelvic floor therapy in residency. We had one lecture last year, and I have myself referred a few people to pelvic floor therapy, but couldn't really tell you much about what goes in there. Would love to hear more about what you learned by going to pelvic PT!
  • Can we see pictures of your closet? Do you have a wardrobe inventory? I have a small reach in closet and it’s a mess and I’m struggling with what to wear and the “I have nothing to wear” Syndrome with a stuffed closet and don’t know how to start. Advice?
    • I also have a small reach in closet! Here's a picture from a few years ago, not much has changed in the general lay out. Since I've basically moved every 2 years for the last 10+ years (this is the longest I've ever been in one house!), I was constantly going through my closet and editing it down. I still feel at times like I too have nothing to wear, but I know that's not true, and just go for my tried and true favorites. I wrote a whole series a while back about building a cohesive wardrobe, which included a post about cleaning out your closet so you can start fresh. I hope that helps!

  • Well January came and went! This month was a busy one, I was back on L&D, which always makes for long days. We also took our inservice exam, and I interviewed for my first attending job! This month I'm on GYN, which involves lots of surgeries, and ED/hospital consults.
  • I'm going to Scottsdale at the end of February with my class for a conference, and need all the suggestions! We have been there once, so I can't wait to be back, but it's been a few years, so any food/drink/experience recommendations you have, I'd love to hear them!
  • Penny said her first word last month. It was "dada". Of course :(

  • I recently saw a post about the "most kissed lips in the world"...the original model for today's CPR dolls. So sad, but also slightly creepy.
  • Certain inflammatory infections can cause fistulas, or tracts, to develop between organs that aren't supposed to be connected, like the colon to the uterus.
  • Friendly health reminders: make sure your pap smears are up to date. Talk to your parents about their health conditions so you can tell your doctors about them (especially cancers in your family!). Bleeding after menopause is not normal, see your doctor immediately if that happens. Get your flu shot. Stay healthy out there, love you, mean it.

  • I'm slowly beginning the process of finding my first real physician job out of residency (18 more months until I'm done!), which includes lots of meet-and-greets, tours, interviews, and dinners. Unlike medical school and residency interviews, I plan on actually dressing in clothes I like and feel comfortable in, like this neutral and modern blazer, which I plan on pairing with a simple white top and my new work pants.
  • I know it's not really for this season of life, but I can't help but want this belt bag. I just imagine it with a black t shirt dress and cognac sandals and wearing it all summer long as my summer uniform...clearly planning for six months from now ;)
  • There's just something about the black and white print on this shirt that I'm dying to try. I think it would look darling tucked into higher waisted jeans!

  • I know you have LL Bean boots, and the fleece quarter and the quilted quarter zip. I have the first two after your recommendations and love them also! What else do you own from LL Bean?
  • Are you you still spinning at home? How has your bike held up? Looking into this option myself!
    • I haven't just because I'm short on time - I'd really love to get back into it, I think about it quite often. I loved my at home spin work outs, I always felt amazing doing them and after. Chris still does them and the bike (our homemade peloton) is holding up amazing!
  • Would you consider doing an updated video tour of your home?
    • Yes! I will film one in the next few weeks and will write a post about it!

  • Happy New Year's Eve! We are in Rochester for the long weekend, celebrating a delayed Christmas with my husband's family, as well as the new year. It's been so nice to have these days at home with Penny before starting a busy six months of work.
  • This month I spent the month with our breast surgeon. ObGyns are very often the doctors who find breast cancer, either through yearly exams (have you had yours? Make it your goal for early 2020 to see your friendly neighborhood gynecologist) or through screening imaging, so it's been very insightful to see what happens once lumps are found. It also makes me hate that the organ we use to feed our babies can turn on us and try to kill us. Cancer is just so cruel.
  • Penny is in such a fun age right now! She's so interactive and smily and starting to move around more. We are also starting the babyled weaning process of feeding her more foods, which has been so fun to see her trying new foods and becoming more coordinated.

  • I have been looking for a small case for jewelry for short weekend trips - ones where you only need to bring a few small pieces of jewelry and not like...the whole collection. Nothing caught my eye until I saw this adorable case from Loft of all places. I ordered it immediately.

  • I've actually found the cutest (inexpensive) items at H&M - like this cute bunny sweater...at 1/4 of the cost of the Boden sweater above.
  • I'm usually anti-ruffle butts...but couldn't say no to these fair isle pants. so so cute!

  • What is your biggest advice for someone planning on going to medical school?
    • This is a tough one to answer because there are so many ways to approach this question. My biggest advice for someone who wants to go into medicine? Explore all other fields to make sure being a doctor is the thing you want - there are so many other jobs in medicine and the medical field, from optometry to dentistry to pharmacy to nursing to social work to technicians, that you want to make sure the sacrifice and time that comes with becoming a physician is exactly what you want. My biggest advice for a pre-med? Start volunteering early and find something you are passionate about - doing something long term means a lot more than doing a bunch of little things, and it gives you something to talk about during interviewed. Tips for just getting into medical school? Apply broadly, and be persistent.
  • I'm a social worker interviewing for a student wellness coordinator position at a medical school. I really enjoyed following you through your med school journey and I think it's given me a great insight into the joys and stresses of student life - so thanks! I know it's been a couple of years, but I'm curious - were there any resources, education or programming offered by your school that helped you stay sane and maintain wellness? If not, what would you have liked to have seen/known?
    • Ohhh, such an interesting question! I think one of the biggest thing that would have made a difference is probably something you can't control, which was that we took exams every Monday...which meant that every single weekend was spent studying. It would have been so nice to at least have 1 Friday exam/month so you know you got some free time...but probably not something you can control from your position! Wellness has become such a big topic in medicine...and I know everyone is doing the best at providing events and resources to students and residents, but so much of being well (or unwell) is from the stress of the job that can't be solved with free breakfasts or yoga events. I wish I had a better answer and something that you can provide for your students, but the unwell in medicine is so inherent to the job that the whole game needs to change before people are really well.
  • I know on Instagram you mentioned compression socks you love. I tried looking for them so i didn’t have to message you but I probably didn’t look hard enough.
    • I've been very loyal to Sockwell, and have recently also started wearing the Comrad compression socks. I plan on doing a full compression sock comparison post in the upcoming months!

  • Happy December! This was supposed to be posted over the weekend but my husband worked all weekend and I was home with the baby alone and I forgot my charger at work and basically I just spent all weekend holding my baby and I know you'll forgive me for posting a day late (kidding, I know no one was holding their breath waiting for this post). I'm still trying to figure out how to occasionally blog while focusing on work and my family. I also don't want to fall back into the trap of just ordering a bunch of clothes to try on, even though they are always my most popular posts. Just the never ending battle of trying to find some kind of balance point in life!
  • This month was so good! I was on UroGyn, which deals a lot with urinary incontinence and pelvic reconstruction and I learned so much. I feel so much more comfortable talking with and managing incontinence, something that is extremely common but not something a lot of women talk about, and I'm excited to now have a better understanding of how to help my patients. So not only did I learn a ton, but I also had fairly normal people hours this month, which meant more time home with Penny, so that was amazing.
  • As someone who is very typically a last minute present buyer, I'm trying real hard to stay ahead this year! I already got Chris's gift (...because we are buying the Nintendo Switch together so we can play MarioKart hahahaha), and my dad's and my Secret Santa's for Chris's family. Feeling accomplished while taking advantage of all these Black Friday deals!

  • Tocophobia is the term for having a deep seeded fear of childbirth.
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology actually has some of the coolest words in medicine.  Laminaria is  kelp, but it can be dried and made into a stick that when placed in the cervix, will slowly dilated over time, dilating the cervix for procedures like a D&C or IUD placement!

  • If you have a family holiday photo shoot coming up, I think you need to wear these amazing tartan pants - pair it with a white or black blouse, and black accessories! Now I kind of want to take family pictures...
  • I bought this guazy blouse this month and just love it so much - I get to wear dress clothes the next few months to work, so I've already worn it twice! It's perfect for laying a long cardigan or scarf over (or wear with those tartan pants above!). Size down if you're in between sizes, mine is a medium!
  • Obsessed with this herringbone scarf...and it's only $17!

  • Where did you buy the storage bins for baby clothing? I love the idea of sorting the different size baby clothes that way. I have a 3 month old baby boy and love seeing your recommendations.
    • Ours are from Target! They come in a pack of two, and are a good size for keeping clothes organized by age group - so far I've used 2 bins per age group we have. I figured it'll be great either for the next baby, or to loan to friends/family when they have babies!
  • I have a few friends graduating medical this year and am trying to come up with ideas for gifts for them. I remember somewhere you talking about the white engraved book you log your procedures in but I can't seem to find where it was that you talked about it. Do you know where it came from? Also do you have any other recommendations for good gifts for graduating medical students that would be more budget friendly (since I am still a medical student myself)?

  • Hello! Welcome to the new monthly edition of the Top Three posts! I used to write these posts weekly (for years!) but they take sooooo much time, and between working some weekends, wanting to see my husband and baby, and just being tired, I figured a monthly edition would be a good compromise between wanting a space to share and balancing it with my life! If you have any specific requests for topics to cover, or if you have a question, I would love to hear from you!
  • Speaking of balance and life, for the next 9 weeks, I'm on what we call "off service" rotations, which basically means I'm not working on L&D or doing surgery daily, but spending time with various urogynecologists, doing some surgery, and spending time with the breast surgeons. It means later wake up times, earlier going home times, and just a small break from the grind! I'm already enjoying the fact that I get to see Penny more than an hour a day like I did last month when I was on MFM (which btw, day in the life post coming soon!).
  • Hope you guys are having a great Halloween! Penny is going to be a baby cow today (fitting for the baby of a WI girl, right?!) and I'll be here faithful farmer. I was going to be cheese, but procrastinated on buying a cheesehead ;)

  • Bruxism: excessive teeth grinding or clinching. Botox is a form of treatment that can help with that!
  • Speaking of botox, it can also help with certain urinary complaints, like interstitial cystitis and overactive bladder incontinence. It involves using a small scope, and injecting 100-200 units into the bladder in 1 ml portions.
  • And since we're on the botox topic, botox can also be used to treat torticollis. Botox: not just for your laugh lines!

  • I remember a while ago you posted about compression socks for work. What brand do you use? I am looking for a pair or two!
    • I wear these Sockwell socks. I now have like 9 pairs of them, and I wear them to work every. single. day. It's the only reason I'm able to be on my feet for so long! I wash mine in the washing machine, but air dry them so that the elastic doesn't wear out.
  • Do you tweeze/shape your eyebrows or is your shape natural? My eyebrows are blonde but thicker/denser than yours, and I have always been afraid of ruining their shape by tweezing.
    • I used to get them threaded about every two months for probably 6 years. When we moved for residency, I moved too far away to see the lady I was seeing throughout medical school, and I didn't really want to find someone knew, so now I just let them be, and tweeze stray hairs here and there!
  • I've been searching for months now and can't find what I'm looking for, so tell me, is there a thing that exists that is more structured than a cardigan but not a blazer?
    • Yes! What you are missing is a ponte or knit blazer. It has the structure of a blazer, which adds a bit more ...well, structure! But when it's made in a knit or ponte fabric, rather than the traditional wool, it's as comfortable as a cardigan. Old Navy always has several styles of this type of blazer (here in black). Topshop has this amazing boucle blazer that I'm now adding to my cart because I love it. It's the perfect mix of structure and comfy that I think you're looking for!

  • Did not go down to Florida as originally planned. My best friend and I planned a little three day trip down to the Florida Keys. I rearranged a bunch of my schedule so that we could make it happen. Unfortunately, my flight was cancelled and couldn't find a new one that worked for our tight timeline, after she had already been down there for 12 hours! We were both super bummed that it didn't work out, and that she had to spend the weekend alone. My take away: never flying Jet Blue again, and never flying on a trip separately!
  • Decided that next week, I'm going to restart BBG - the first round of BBG is 12 weeks, which makes the last week of the program the week of my wedding. Anyone want to join in on the fun? I'm already forcing my sister to do it "with" me even though we live in different time zones. I love spinning, but I need some weights to tone up these arms!
  • Start L&D days again - it's been a few months since I was on the day shift! This is my last time on L&D days as an intern, which is hard to believe we're already nearing that point! Excited to be a part of the crazy again!

  • January was cervical cancer awareness month and to celebrate, I got my pap smear as I was due! Now that I'm 30, I get co-testing done every five years. Co-testing tests for both changes in the cervical cells (the pap smear part) and tests for HPV (the virus that is largely responsible for those cell changes). Curious to know what you're due for? Check out this page for more information! Share with your girlfriends, sisters, mothers. Cervical cancer is preventable and there's no reason we should still be dying of a disease we have screening tools and vaccines for.

  • Hiiiiiiii! Finally back with a top three post. These posts normally take about 3-4 hours to write, and honestly, I don't always feel super motivated to write them. So I think my new plan is to kind of work on them throughout the week, and if it doesn't get posted, just keep it and save it for the next week! I hope that's okay with you guys - I still love sharing what I've finding out there, but with less time actually spent on the internet, I'm hoping to find a good middle ground!
  • This week I started Gyn Onc - it's the service that takes care of the patients with endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancer. It's going to be a really great month - you work one and one with your chief and the attending, so I know I'm going to learn a lot, improve my surgical skills, and work on my post-op management. Here's your monthly reminder that if you are due for your pap smear, go see your friendly local Gyn :)

  • Hiiiii! Sorry about the radio silence this week. I had big plans to have a few posts ready for the week, and then reading and prepping for the week, and actually spending time with CR and the dogs took precedence. I know you guys don't notice when I don't post, but I don't want to just come on here once a week and link dump and walk away.
  • Anyway, the week was really good! A few really long days, but honestly, as long as I'm able to eat a few meals while there, it is really fun to finally be doing the work - really, that's the biggest difference between being a med student and an intern. You still don't know much and are probably more of a hinderance than anything, but at least you can put in orders haha
  • Lots of fun things happened this weekend though! CR finally got a new car! It's been a slow three year down hill battle with the car - it didn't have heat for two winters, we wouldn't drive it on the highways or more than a half an hour away from home, and I have had to come jump or get his car towed probably at least a dozen times. So now with a regular paycheck, and real responsiblities to show up to work, he made the big step and got a car he loves. I'm so excited for him, and for me, since my poor little car now gets a break from being our main car (but in exciting news in that department, I was able to pay it off yesterday, a whole year ahead of schedule. She's all mine!!!).

    • Compression socks are going to make a WORLD of difference for you! I didn't really start wearing them until the end of third year, and wish I had started earlier! I wear these ones from Sockwell - I know have at least six pairs, and refuse to go to work (in scrubs) without them!! I also will prop up my legs after a long day to help with the drainage and circulation. Avoid salty foods and drink water when you can!
  • How did you not let the competitive atmosphere of medical school and the students get to you? Specially with students who want to go into the same field as you?
    • That's a great question, and one that's really hard to answer because parts of it are really an internal thing. I have always been more about helping out my friends/co-students, and actually wanting to be friends with those around me. In school, our grades were not based on a bell curve, so what you got on a test is what you got - I suppose that helped in wanting to help your friends succeed. I loved getting to know people on interviews, and actually now that I think of it, even though they were 'my competition", I never even saw them that way! I saw them as my future co-workers, not something that needs to be dragged down to make me look better. One of my close friends, and former roommate, also was going for ObGyn (and now is!), and we both just wanted the other to succeed, and bonded over our experiences. It's just more fun to support those around you rather than dragging them down - that's fun for no one.
  • Knowing how things have worked out with the residency of your dreams and the good stuff in your personal life, do you have anything you wish you could say to reassure yourself in the stressful lead-up to residency applications/interviews?
    • Oh man, of course I wish I could go back to my 22 year old self and tell her that things will work out. I think because you guys obviously weren't with me every day during the hard times, it's easy to think now "oh she has the job she wanted and a great man to marry" but it was definitely not always like that. I struggled to get into medical school, struggled at times in medical school, and spent the greater part of a decade dating the wrong person for me. So I suppose it would have been really reassuring to tell myself that yes, it will work out ("the way it's supposed to" like they say!), but having those experiences also shaped me to be who I am - grateful for the life and opportunities I've been given and have worked for.

  • What a week, you guys! While we are technically still going through orientation right now (one more week!), we have been going in before orientation starts to learn how to round on our patients, write notes, and put in orders. I got to help with an endometrial ablation (which is a very small procedure but it was nice to be a part of it nonetheless), and did a colposcopy. Our upperlevels could not be more kind and gracious to us interns as we learn the way of the land. Every day I'm so thankful to be where I am, even though I'm feeling extremely overwhelmed about what the future will be like.
  • CR had to work all weekend, so I used it as a time to get my life in order. Furniture was built (we got this for our kitchen for the coffee station - we just have to sand and stain the wood top to make it match our wood floors!), the house was cleaned, I organized my study materials, and today I'm spending much of the day cooking meals for the week and reading all the things.
  • Speaking of meal prepping, do you guys have any recommendations for bakes or casseroles? Today I'm making a sweet potato egg bake, buffalo chicken spagetti squash casserole, and CR is making chili - we should be pretty set for the week haha....but I'd love to try something new!

top three [07.02.2017]

this week we: painted our fireplace // got a white coat // got new shelves!

  • So I finally tried on these high waisted jeans and you guys were so right. They are so flattering and fun to wear...and best part is that they are majorly on sale right now! Lets be twins :)
  • How absolutely gorgeous is this crochet overlay dress from Eliza J (I promise it's so much cuter than that makes it seem). If I had a wedding to go to this summer, I'd absolutely wear that!
  • So I know this may be a bit controversial...but I could almost see myself wearing these overalls! I don't know, is that crazy?

  • Any suggestions on how to prepare and do well on fourth year ObGyn rotations?
    • Yes! I loved my sub-Is during fourth year because I felt like I actually got to do something, more than you did during third year (and I got to do a lot during my third year rotations!). When you first start working with the resident, make sure you let them know that you are very interested in their program, and ask them what is typically expected of fourth years. Offer to come in to pre-round (which I did, even though it meant I got to the hospital at 3:45 AM), see triage patients, and help write up "the list". Try to get to know the residents and have them get to know you. This is a time for you to get to know the program just as much as it for them to see you. Know how to hand tie, how to help getting the patient ready in the OR (help move the patient, have your gloves and gown ready, grab warm blankets, write your name on the board), and obviously know the basics of managing labor. Good luck - it's a really fun time (writing that all out makes me even more excited to finally start all of this!).
  • I am a first year medical student and I am getting married in September. I was wondering if you have thought about kids. I know your situation is a little different since you are getting married in residency, but since you have gone through medical school - I was wondering if you had some insight on a good time to have kids. End of medical school? In residency? Or waiting till after? I really don't want to wait that long since I'll be well into my 30s when I complete residency.
    • You're right, I was in a different place than you are currently! But I completely understand trying to plan out when to have babies, something we discuss all the time now that we're in residency. Looking back, of course there are no perfect times to have a baby, but I would say there are two time that are really a bit better. Having a baby towards the end of first year would be a good time -  you're already used to the pace of medical school by the time you would be heavily pregnant, and then you have all summer to stay at home (really, your only summer off)! The other really great time would be to have the baby during the spring of fourth year - auditions and interviews are over, the Match will happen soon/has already happened, and you will have a lot more freedom and time off before residency starts in July. Of course, people make it work during all parts of school - I know women who had babies during second year and during third year. But looking back, if I had to choose, those two times would have been the most practical.
  • I'm looking for a pair of sandals for the summer. I want something with a bit more support - any suggestions?

  • This week has been a bit of relaxing and rushing around to get everything in order! CR started orientation, so we had several events for that (including a spouse orientation, white coat ceremony, and intern picnic!), as well as me trying to get stuff settled in the house. My mom was also here for a few days, so we had fun exploring the area. Even though we are still missing our downstairs furniture, it's starting to feel a lot more like home!
  • If you follow along on instastories, you know I just tried on a bunch of clothes (all my orders arrived on the same day!). I didn't actually buying anything prior to that in June, which is why there's no budget post, but I will have a review post up this week as well as a budget post in July (no worries, it's not going anywhere!). As a preview, I'm definitely keeping this jean + top from Madewell combo, as well as this linen top that'll be perfect for work. Still debating if that black top from Ann Taylor is staying or going!
  • Well, it's my last weekend before residency starts! Granted, we have orientation all week (and Tuesday off) so it isn't really "real" yet until the following week, but here we go! I have a lot of feelings about what is about to start, but haven't been able to really work through them yet. I'm nervous, excited, scared, honored, fearful, and hopeful. It's a confusing time, apparently!
