gift ideas for graduating medical students

what to get a medical student for gradution
With thousands of medical students across the country getting ready to graduate from medical school, I've received several requests for a gift guide...which luckily, I've been thinking about for months now! I love making gift guides, and having made a Christmas one for medical student for the past four years, I was excited to make one for upcoming graduates. I've had a few items on my list for a while, I've asked my girlfriends, and I consulted google (although the posts I found were from 2005 and recommended buying mp3 players, so only a bit outdated!). Below are 14 items that I think would make great gift ideas for any student about to graduate from medical school!
  1. Patagonia fleece (embroidery optional): Consider it a part of their "welcome to residency" uniform. A lot of residents choose to wear a comfortable fleece versus the traditional white coat while working in the hospital. While there are a ton of different companies that make fleeces, my personal favorite is the Patagonia "better sweater". To make it more personalized, you can take it to any local embroidery shop to have their new doctor title and department embroidered on it! Don't forget that the proper way to write a doctor's name is either (I'll use my name as an example):  Dr. Franziska Hasselhof, or Franziska Hasselhof, DO (not "Dr. Franziska Hasselhof, DO").
  2. Diploma frame: Most school bookstores sell these online, and I think it's one of the best "traditional" presents you can get any recent grad! CR's parents have gotten him one for every degree he's received, and I'm so jealous (although I graduated from college six years ago, I'm debating finally getting one from UW for my undergrad degree). This is one present I'd love to receive - they are so pricey, and really allow a new grad to show off that degree they worked so hard for.
  3. Apple Watch: You can read my full review of my Apple Watch here, and why I love it, but in short, it's great to have access to your phone on your watch, and as soon-to-be residents, we all need a watch! You can get one of the older series for around $200
  4. Lunch boxes: Not the sexiest of all presents, but definitely practical! With most of us putting in around 80 hours a week some weeks, having a way to keep your food cool for hours at a time will be super important! Even though I have a food allowance for our cafeteria, I know that I'll personally try to bring most of my own food to stay on track with my dieting goals.
  5. Subscription Wine boxes: When I asked my girlfriends for ideas for this post, one suggestion a Wine of the Month club and the rest of us immediately responded with YES THAT IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA! What's better than having delicious wine delivered to your front step once a month? I love this idea - it's a great way to wind down at the end of the day, and the recipient can invite over some of their co-interns for wine and bonding time. It's a win all around. Here's a run down of the 12 most popular services (I think I'd try Tasting Room, myself!).
  6. Yeti mug: With most residents showing up at the hospital between the hours of 4-6 AM, coffee or tea will be a staple for most of us. A Yeti mug will keep their beverage of choice either hot or cold for hours on end. Include a giftcard to a local coffee shop (that has an early morning drive through) or one of those subscription coffee boxes for home brewers. I'm personally hoping I can perfect my at-home mango black iced tea!
  7. Meal Subscription box: When I lived with a couple who were both residents last summer while I was on an audition rotation, they had a meal subscription service drop off supplies twice a week. They said they absolutely loved that they had to do zero work ahead of time to make delicious home cooked meals - no grocery runs, no food going bad in the fridge. They loved that they were still cooking healthy meals and spending that time together in the kitchen. These services are kind of pricey, which makes them a great gift for a recent grad! There are a ton to chose from - Refinery 29 narrowed down 16 of the most popular ones, so you can find something for any type of eater!
  8. Noise Canceling headphones: Although we will no longer have the "student" title, our learning is far from over. Between Step 3, daily education requirements, inservice exams, and board exams, we have years of exams ahead of us. Noise canceling headphones have been one of those items I use constantly, and am so thankful for! Plus they are great if someone needs to catch a few minutes of sleep in a not-so-quiet hospital call room.
  9. Personalized mug: I love these mugs, and have a whole bunch waiting to be handed out in five weeks!
  10. Cleaning service: This is something a different couple who were both in a surgical residency mentioned last fall. They said they received it as a graduation present, and that it's been amazing to have someone come over once every 3-4 weeks to deep clean their house. Again, something that'll be a bit pricey, but also something they'll appreciate for the several months their house is spotless at least once a month ;)
  11. iPad mini: The mini's are small enough to keep in white coat pockets, which is especially great for anyone who will be in a speciality that rounds a lot (most medicine services). It'll be great for looking up something quickly, for all of their medical apps, and for down time on quieter night shifts.
  12. On the go charger: With a lot of hospitals switching from traditional pagers to iPhone paging systems, there's a greater chance phones will die on those longer shifts. I love that this Rebecca Minkoff charging cable keychain is just plain cute, but also hides a lightening cord.
  13. Embroidered scrubs: While those soon to be residents going into surgical specialities will have to wear hospital-issued scrubs while in the OR, it would be nice to have a nicer set or two to wear for off-service blocks or days outside of the OR (for example, I will spend one day a week in our clinic, where I don't have to wear hospital issued scrubs). I really like Maevn's scrubs, or you can get a set from Medelita and have their names embroidered on them.
  14. Pens: You know what's a hot commodity amongst anyone in the hospital? PENS. A big box of nice pens should last a resident quite some time. My personal favorite pens are the Tul pens and the Pilot G-2 pens. If the recent grad loves stationery and paper products, include fun highlighters, a cute pencil bag, and occupational appropriate USB flash drive!
Congrats to all of you soon-to-be doctors!

gift guide for medical students

It's time for my favorite gift guide this year - the medical student gift guide! I have done one of these the past few years (here and here), and while in the past I made ones for the part of school I was in, I tried to be a bit more all inclusive of all medical students (although this year's version does include a few more things that future fourth year students will use a ton). Some are practical and some are more fun!

ONE || Joyce recommended this, and I love them! You can personalize the little figure and put their future doctor title on it. I may have already ordered a few as gifts for friends, but had to get one for myself too ;)
TWO || Vera the Uterus is my little white coat side kick, and I am obsessed with her. Get one for the future uterus/heart/kidney specialist. I've given several of these away, to other students, people who just matched, and even a few of my favorite attendings!
THREE || CR got me this, and I have used it every day for the past six months. Between living in dorm rooms with shared bathrooms and traveling for interviews, this will get a ton of use!
FOUR || and I got this for CR - any upcoming fourth year will definitely need a way to transport their interview suits!
FIVE || for the student who lives somewhere cold and wants to be comfy & warm while studying (I love mine!)
SIX || the alternative to those stiff white coats - they'll live in it all winter long (and those heavily AC-ed summers).
SEVEN || I've used mine almost every day of my clinical rotations. It folds up to fit in white coat pockets! You can also get it stamped with a name - I got one of these for my sister last Christmas.
EIGHT || for your future favorite obgyn or midwife (I love this one!)
NINE || a name tag for stethoscopes - love the leather versus the other plastic versions out there
TEN || either for long study sessions or for lots of flight travel, any student will get a ton of use out of a pair of noise canceling headphones.
ELEVEN || my favorite USB stick - makes for a great stocking stuffer too!
TWELVE || just found this print the other. I plan on getting CR one some day for his future office!
THIRTEEN || keeps drinks cold for an entire day - I have one, and ice cubes stay solid for 24 hours! Get it monogrammed to keep it separate from all the others found in hospital.

Other items that aren't as fun to buy but just as practical:
  • Starbucks gift card
  • An iPass/Easy Pass - I drove to all my interviews this year, and using my iPass has saved me so much time!
  • Pandora One (gets rid of distracting commercials!)
  • A massage gift card
  • A cleaning service that comes once a month
  • Amazon prime + gift card

gift guide for stationery lovers (+ a giveaway!)

A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing at Anthropologie when I ended up in my favorite section, the stationery section! I fell in love with this adorable pencil case - my friends in college used to make fun of me mercilessly because I loved a good pencil case, and it's kind of funny that ten years later, I'm still just as in love with good stationery and accessories as I was then. I ended up not buying it because I no longer use as many paper goods as I once did, but it did get me thinking about how there are still a ton of stationery and accessories we can use now as adults.

A few of my favorite items in this gift guide are from one of my favorite online paper goods site, Minted. I've worked with them several times in the past, including on how to create a gallery wall on a budget, and how CR and I found a way to decorate our home in personalized and neutral themes. In this post specifically, the personalized stationery, gold map (you tell them the address, they make it for you!), and pin board, are all from Minted. They also have a ton of other cute gifts (check out their gift guide here). We also got our Christmas card from them this year! To help spread the holiday cheer, Minted is offering two readers a $125 giftcard each - go here to enter the giveaway. We are looking forward to working with Minted in the future, including sharing our Christmas card, and future wedding invitations!

for your friend who really loves her smart phone...

I like to do a few gift guides every year, usually on topics that I am also interested in - previous versions included a gift guide for 1st/2nd year medical students, one for 3rd year students, and for your friend who just really loves organization. I've had this USB keychain in my shopping cart for months, which got me thinking about all the tech things I wish I owned. I'm 100% not a techie (I just really love my Apple products,) so here are some of my ideas for your iPhone obsessed friend (or yourself, no judgement!).

  1. Noise canceling headphones. I've had these for three years, and am obsessed with them!!
  2. iPad cover: they also have a version you can customize yourself with pictures
  3. Portable picture printer. Love the idea of this - it's like a 21st century version of polaroids...with instagram filters (how meta)
  4. iPhone dock: a sleek (and more organized) way of charging your phone
  5. Hidden USB/lightening cord: this ones on my wishlist - it's chic and functional!
  6. Portable charger: provides 16 more hours of battery time (and it's pretty)
  7. Bluetooth speakers: We have a similar version, and use it all the time. We use it in the kitchen, use it in the garage during work outs, and take it along on camping trips!
  8. Keychain Apple Watch charger: the one item I really want - it's cute, it charges your watch, and it's easy to use on the go.
  9. Cord case: just ordered this after messing around with all my cords way too long.
  10. Cute tech gloves: no need to get frostbite while trying to return a text message - perfect for someone who lives in the colder parts of the country!
  11. Smart light bulb: kind of an oddball one at the end, but you can adjust these light bulbs from your phone. They apparently last 22 years?!

gift guide: for a 3rd or 4th year medical student

gift ideas for a medical student

  1. the most convenient pocket organizer: CR got me one of these, and I'm obsessed with it. It's the perfect way to always having something to write on, it keeps all of your papers in one place, and if you order it directly from the website, you can have it engraved! I'm getting a certain newly minted doctor one for Christmas.
  2. a cellphone/wallet combo: on most rotations, we keep our jackets/purses in a locker room or assigned space, and may not be able to go grab our wallets when we are told to go eat. A phone case that has a slot for cards is the perfect solution. The secret compartment on this version is pretty fun too!
  3. a vehicle for caffeine, with a bit of sass: a bit of motivation for those shelf exam study sessions
  4. a tape measurer for a future OB: each of the OB's I was with had their own tape measurer. If you know someone who is going into OB, this would be a really cute present for them. Plus...monogram!
  5. badge reels with a sense of humor: I'm obsessed with these - I ordered one for myself, my OB attending, and as a present for a friend. They come in a bunch of different categories. And if the student you know prefers to be a bit more professional (I plan on only wearing mine when I'm actually on my OB rotation with attendings I already know), a badge reel from their undergrad or medical school is always appropriate (and a good conversation starter!).
  6. a portable charger for those long shifts: as students, we spend a lot of time using our electronics, but don't always have the battery life we need on those 12-24 hour days. CR gave me a similar one for Christmas last year, and I use it at least three times a week.
  7. a little surgeon USB: my friend Kira got me one of these, and I'm obsessed. It's so cute, and would make a great stocking stuffer.
  8. a print for her gallery wall: for the girl who likes a bit of nerdy mixed in her gallery wall

other ideas:
starbucks giftcard: lots of long days require lots of coffee
gas giftcard: with interviews and electives, that mileage adds up
pandora one: because we still have to study, and ads are annoying
a massage gift card: holding retractors for 6 hours tenses you up!
amazon gift card or amazon prime: we will always need study materials (and pens!)

for your most organized friend

organized giftguide

I have always loved organization. Growing up I religiously used my school planner, my closet has always been color coordinated, and desk drawer was always arranged neatly. Now that I'm an "adult" (...right?), I still have a need for everything to be organized. If you have a friend like that, and are looking for a great Christmas present, I have a couple of ideas for you! I own many of these, or have gifted them to other neat freaks, so they've been vetted as great presents ;)
  1. A organizer for your jewels: The perfect way to transport jewelry, or tuck away your more precious jewelry while at home. This is actually on my own Christmas list!
  2. A keychain with quick-detaching links: My aunt got me one of these years and years ago, and I just think it's the best. It keeps your keys organized, it's easy to add new things on to the keychain, and even easier to remove them if you need to loan a key to someone. I plan on getting a couple as stocking stuffers this year!
  3. An organizer for the make-up lover: I own something very similar, and loooove it. It makes getting ready in the morning so much easier because you know exactly where to find everything. There are also a ton currently at Target (they are usually in the travel make-up bag section!)
  4. The cutest stackable boxes: This would be great for the friend who you know loves organizing, but you don't know what she may or may not need. The boxes look great by themselves, or stacked together. Wouldn't they look great on a bookshelf?
  5. A box to show off your watch collection: I also own this, and am obsessed. I never had a good way of organizing my watches until I bought this a few years ago. If your friend has a sizable watch collection, she'll thank you over and over again for this!
  6. The best way to keep your sunglasses (and regular glasses) organized: Krista talked about this glasses organizer some months ago, and I immediately went out and bought it. It keep my favorite sunglasses (and real glasses) protected, and not at the bottom of a drawer somewhere.
  7. A "corditto": I got CR this for Christmas last year, and because he loves organization even more than I do, he loved it. This would be great for someone who has to travel a lot, or isn't home a lot, but needs their cords with them at all times.

Do you have a suggestion for something I've missed that we could get our more organization-focused friends? I'd love to hear them!

for that fashionable friend...

fashionable friend gift guide We all have a friend that is super fashionable, and therefore impossible to shop for. I'm always worried that I'll get her something in a color that she doesn't like, in the wrong size, or something she would never ever wear.

My solution is to buy her something practical and fashionable - items that aren't specific fashion things like a scarf or sweater, but things she'll use for the items she picked out herself. If you have any suggestions, please share! I'm always looking for the next best present :)

one: keeps her jewelry organized on the go (comes in Tiffany blue too!)
two: for her trinkets and baubles (I suggest adding these bracelets)
three: she spends money on her leather, give her the tools to take care of them
four: upgrade her closet with a few sets of these wooden hangers
five: a place for her collection of beautiful watches (I love mine!)
six: keeps her unmentionables separated in style
seven: so her boots keep their shape for years to come

what to get a medical student for christmas

I've had a couple of people ask me about gift ideas for a medical student, so I used my new found collage making skills to round up a few things that I think would make great gifts for medical students. They range from the small and inexpensive to a few electronics that would make an amazing present under the Christmas tree. After debating for years, I'm finally asking for the headphones this year!

one: to keep your coffee hot
two: to share all your stolen books
three: to channel your inner walter white
four: to take all your best notes on
five: to keep your toes warm
six: to drown out the noise
seven: to save your neck muscles
eight: to keep those heating bills down

Other great gift ideas for students (of all levels!)

- Amazon gift cards (seriously, I've spent over $900 on books in the last 1.5 years)
- Starbucks gift cards (or just coffee)
- A massage gift certificate (studentitis is real, my friends)
- A gift card to a nicer local restaurant for a night out after an exam
- Pandora One (no advertisement distractions!)
